Example Project:

Coast Guard CADET ORIENTATION MODULE

Project Overview

Project highlights from an instructional design perspective

TOOLS: Final Cut Pro, Microsoft Paint, Adobe Acrobat, Youtube, and more…

CLIENT: United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The USCGA leadership decided that incoming cadets could not be oriented to the honor code through normal in-person lectures because civilian faculty needed to remain out-of-contact with cadets. So, I proposed and then developed a hybridization of the honor training lessons. I also took responsibility for producing, filming, editing and distributing the videos.

CHALLENGES:
There were numerous challenges related to the dynamic environment: (1) project parameters had to change to conform to updated and changing State, Local and Institutional guidelines for social distancing, (2) The training materials were distributed across multiple stakeholders, (3) stakeholders had to be motivated to cooperate with a time-sensitive project.

Solutions:
Sensitive to the bureaucratic and military culture of the client, I adopted a human-in-the-loop (HITL) communication model, maintaining real-time updates on my progress and receiving regular feedback from administration and leadership stakeholders

Results:
Remarkably, zero honor code infractions were reported during the initial phase of the training program. I understood this to be a significant decrease in the total number of cadets who are reported for honor code violations during their orientation phase. I attribute the success of the project to the superior learning experience and pedagogical design of the online/hybrid training program.

USCGA Training Module

Traditionally, this orientation program was delivered piecemeal by dozens of civilian Professors and Coast Guard Officers. Under my direction, it was transformed into a hybridized program with greater reliance on videos. We also designed the training module to make more intelligent use of time, by building frequent testing environments into the training module.

On the right are clips from three of the seven videos I produced in imovie, working with faculty and staff to ensure content was delivered accurately and on time.
